Substitute Teacher Guidelines

Substitute teachers are valuable members of the Penn-Harris-Madison community and they are working every day in our schools.

Each Indiana school district is allowed to set their own guidelines for substitute teachers.  At Penn-Harris-Madison we require that our substitutes have at least 60 college credit hours in any area of certification.  Occasionally we will waive this requirement if the applicant can provide significant documented work or volunteer experiences including name(s) and phone number(s) of immediate supervisor(s) who may be contacted for verification of this information.  They would also need to include letters of reference from two P-H-M school administrators.

We will apply for an expanded criminal history check on each applicant and they must hold either a valid Indiana Teaching License or a Substitute Certificate. The cost for the expanded criminal history check is $28; this is to be paid by the applicant with a money order.

Penn-Harris-Madison pays substitute teachers $65 per day.

We require that all substitute teachers attend a mandatory training session in order to be eligible to work in a P-H-M school. Training will be held in the Board Room at the Educational Services Center, 55900 Bittersweet Road, Mishawaka IN 46545 which is just north of Penn High School on Bittersweet Road.

Training will be held on the following dates and times and reservations are not necessary.
