Young Author's Conference encourages reading and writing
Join us for a morning of fun-filled activities in reading and writing that
will inspire your child to stretch his/her skills in language arts. The
Young Author’s Conference is designed for students in kindergarten
through fifth grade and their parents. We hope to see you on
Saturday, March 17 from 8:45 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at Schmucker
Middle School. Cynthia Furlong Reynolds, a well-known children’s
author from Michigan will discuss her experiences as a writer.
Participants will also work with Mr. Dan (Vukmirovich), the Guitar
Registration for kindergarten starts February 27
Registration for kindergarten for the 2012-2013 school year will begin the week of February 27. A parent or guardian can register a child at the elementary school he or she will attend and all elementary schools offer full-day kindergarten. Elementary school offices at Bittersweet, Elm Road, Horizon, Madison, Mary Frank, Meadow’s Edge, Northpoint, Prairie Vista and Walt Disney are open between 7:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. and at Moran and Elsie Rogers the offices are open from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Six P-H-M schools awarded Four Stars
The Indiana Department of Education has announced the 2010-2011 Four Star Schools and Penn-Harris-Madison has six; Discovery Middle School, Horizon Elementary School, Madison Elementary School, Northpoint Elementary School, Prairie Vista Elementary School and Schmucker Middle School. Indiana has 1,780 public schools and only 162 of them earned Four Star status. A Four Star school must fall into the top 25th percentile for End of Course Assessment passing percentages when compared with schools statewide.

Dr. Jerry Thacker Named 2012 Indiana Superintendent of the Year
INDIANAPOLIS- October 12, 2011 -- Dr. Jerry L. Thacker has been named Indiana 2012 Superintendent of the Year by the Indiana Association of Public School Superintendents (IAPSS). He was selected from seven superintendents who were named District Superintendents of the Year in September.
Here is a list and slideshow of facility upgrades around the district
· The Learning Division has new leadership with Dr. Kay Antonelli as Assistant Superintendent for Instruction and Amy Rauch as Director of Secondary Education
· Full day kindergarten will be offered in all elementary schools with a kindergarten curriculum based on Common Core Standards.
· Students with high ability in grades K-5 will be grouped in clusters.
· An inquiry-based science curriculum will be implemented throughout the district.
Non-resident students can apply through June 29, 2012
We are accepting applications from non-resident students until June 29, 2012. We welcome applications from students in good standing and there is no tuition transfer fee. Families must provide transportation to and from school. Please do not withdraw your child from your current school until he or she has been accepted at Penn-Harris-Madison. School calendars for 2011-2012 and 2012-2013 school years have been set. Important dates for parents for the 2011-2012 school year:
August 24, 2011 - First full day of school for students
September 5, 2011 - Labor Day - No school
Northpoint Elementary School named 2010 National Blue Ribbon School
The U.S. Department of Education has recognized Northpoint Elementary School as a 2010 National Blue Ribbon School, one of only 304 schools nationwide. Northpoint has 526 students in kindergarten through fifth grade and Christine Stephan is the school’s principal.
