The Penn-Harris-Madison Board of School Trustees has adopted a policy that allows non-resident students to apply to attend a P-H-M school for educational reasons.
Annual Community Tailgate Party
Make plans to attend the 23rd Annual Penn-Harris-Madison Community Tailgate Party before the Penn vs. Valparaiso football game on Friday, August 20. The tailgate party runs from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and is held between the Educational Services Center administration building and Bittersweet Elementary School - rain or shine!
For $3 you can have your choice of a bratwurst or hotdog, potato chips, cookie, and pop/water. There are no advance ticket sales. Purchase your tickets at the event that night.
Administrative changes announced for the coming school year
Several administrative changes have been made effective for the 2010-2011 school year. Sean Galiher, assistant-to-the-principal at Schmucker Middle School, moves back to Penn High School as associate principal. Galiher was a dean of students at Penn prior to serving at Schmucker Middle School for one year as assistant-to-the-principal. He started his career in education as a math teacher. Galiher is an assistant baseball coach at Penn. In his new position, he will be in charge of all building operations including safety and security.
Time to start thinking about the first day of school
On Wednesday, August 18, 2010 students will be welcomed back to a full day of school at Penn-Harris-Madison School Corporation. Kindergarten students will have orientation on the first day and start a regular day on Thursday, August 19. KinderClub students will start on Thursday, August 19.
Many accomplishments highlight the past school year
Penn High School was recognized by U.S.News & World Report as one of America’s Best High Schools for 2010. Penn High School was named an Indiana Best Buy High School by the Indiana Chamber of Commerce
Summer Food Service Program
P-H-M's Food Service Department is participating in the Summer Food Program. Free meals will be available to children 18 years of age and under, or persons more than 18 who are determined by a state or local public education agency to be mentally or physically disabled and who participate in a public or non-profit private school program established for the mentally or physically disabled.
Health department offers free shot clinics
The shot clinics listed below will offer the new vaccinations required for students in grades 6-12. All clinics will be held in the lobby of the County-City Building, 227 W. Jefferson Blvd., South Bend
All shots are free. Parents must bring student’s complete shot record.

Summer reading recommendations for students
Parents should encourage students to read over the summer and make it a fun family event. A trip to the library can be an adventure with adults and children picking up books for the beach or backyard. Spend time reading together every day because reading is the key to academic success. Student transfers for school year 2010-2011
Penn-Harris-Madison is comprised of eleven elementary schools and three middle schools with distinct attendance boundaries. The P-H-M Transportation Department (258-9565) maintains records on the exact boundary lines in order to identify the residential street addresses aligned with each school, known as the "home school." Students wishing to attend a school other than their "home school" must request and be granted a transfer.
Indiana's 2008-2009 Four Star Schools announced
Superintendent of Public Instruction Dr. Tony Bennett today announced Indiana’s Four Star School awardees for the 2008-2009 school year. The Four Star School Award, the state’s highest distinction, was given to 188 schools for their attendance rates, student achievement and performance on the I-STEP+.
